In the fall of 2019, Elmwood School District #322 created a new course, Education Internship, geared toward helping high school students who aspire to become future educators learn more about the profession through authentic and practical learning experiences. The goal of this session is to show the many reasons why it is important for districts to explore new pathways and competencies for students and the opportunities these can provide them. During this session, attendees will learn more about the steps it takes to get approval, how to implement a new class, and ways to develop the curriculum.
Also, Elmwood School’s first Education Intern, senior Greta Inskeep, will highlight her experiences in this class. She will offer a first hand account of her experiences observing classroom instruction and management, reflecting on practical applications of theories, utilizing transformative technologies, and creating standards-aligned unit plans. Presenters will also illustrate how ISTE Student Standards are strongly embedded into this class. More specifically, presenters will make connections to the Empowered Learner Standard, Creative Communicator Standard, and the Knowledge Constructor Standard through their presentation. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of how to implement this class and how to offer meaningful experiences to future educators.
