Too often we present the world to students through "odd practices" and "weird stuff." Make global education an opportunity for discovery for students through virtual exploration of commonalities and differences. Help students examine why we sometimes have different ways of living, instead of looking at differences as oddities to exclaim over.  The presenter will be working with her Global Education Framework, REACH, in which students focus on:
Reasons for differences
Empathy for struggles
Alliances for change
Civility and respect
Healing the wounds of genocide and racism.
The presenter is an NEA Foundation Fellow and a former member of the National Geographic Education Community Steering Committee as well as a National Geographic Certified Teacher.  Janis will share a website that she developed during her participation in a month-long field school in Mongolia which exemplifies the use of the framework. Participation in the field school was partly funded by IDEA.
